Running a home-based Internet business comes with plenty of distractions, especially when you have kids.
Luckily, there are a number of ways you can keep your business on track even when your children are in and out of the house all day long.
With a distraction-free workday in mind, here are some tips for running your home business with kids thrown in the mix….
Work Around Their Schedules
Your schedule is important, but sometimes it’s just easier to work around your children’s schedules when working from home. You don’t have to rearrange your entire work day; however you might need to shift your work patterns.
If your kids leave for school at 8 a.m. and they don’t get home until 3 p.m., then your ideal work time would fall in between these hours. That gives you a solid seven hours of uninterrupted work.
For younger children who aren’t quite off to school yet, working during their sleep and nap schedules also works well.
This may sound like an inconvenience, but once you get used to the work schedule, it will become part of your everyday routine.
Involve Your Children in Your Home Business
If you have children who are old enough and capable of pitching in, then why not involve them in your home business?
Whether you need help packaging and sending products or you need a filing assistant, involving your kids is a win-win because it helps you out and keeps them busy.
Take Care of Appointments on Specified Days
As the following article shows, from health checkups to sports physicals to caring from your child’s teeth, by taking them to the dentist, there are a lot of appointments that can interrupt your home-based work schedule.
Instead of letting all of those appointments ruin your entire workweek, schedule them all on a specified day.
If you know work is going to get particularly busy mid-week, then you should schedule your children’s appointments at the beginning or end of the week.
By designating appointments on specified days, you won’t be taken by surprise or have to shuffle your work schedule when appointments to come around.
Consider Childcare or After School Programs
Enrolling your children in childcare or after school programs might give you the extra time you’re looking for at your home-based business. Although childcare is an added cost for you, the extra amount of work you fit into your at-home schedule will likely offset the cost.
After school programs are also a great option because they are usually free for children in certain age brackets.
Also known as extended day, these programs keep your kids entertained on school grounds for a few hours after the regular school day ends, which gives you plenty of time to wrap up your workday.
Start a Quiet-Time Policy
One of the best ways to create a distraction-free home business environment is to start a quiet-time policy.
Whether it is a few hours after your kids return from school or weekend afternoons, getting your kids onboard with a home-wide silence schedule will allow you to get your job done while your children are home.
If your kids are a distraction for your home business, the tips above will surely make a difference.
